Commercial fire doors should be installed in all commercial buildings as well as some residential buildings of multiple occupancy, such as blocks of flats or houses of multiple occupancy. Fire safety doors are designed to keep people safe from harm should a fire break out and provide them with a route out of the building. The new regulations mean that fire doors must be installed in a way that provides a vertical and a horizontal escape route through the building.

Internal Fire Doors

Why you need commercial fire doors

These types of doors are installed at entrances and exits, in halls and lobbies (the area between a stairway and a corridor, or where corridors are linked), as well as in stairways. Commercial fire doors protect these areas from smoke, gases and the fire itself, keeping people safe as they leave the building, and helping firefighters. The new Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 state that fire doors must be able to resist temperatures up to 800ºC.

Different fire safety doors are given an FD based on how long the door is resistant to fire. The four main FD ratings are FD30 (30 minutes resistance), FD60 (60 minutes), FD90 (90 minutes) and FD120 (120 minutes). Having more than one fire door along a designated fire exit route increases the area’s fire resistance time. So, if there are two FD30-rated fire safety doors along a corridor, the fire resistance level for that corridor doubles to 60 minutes.

Our commercial fire door services

The new regulations became effective in January 2023 but only for commercial and residential buildings in England. It is the responsibility of the building owner(s) or designated person to make sure that the correct fire safety doors are installed and that regular fire door safety checks are carried out both quarterly and annually. At J&D Carpentry Services, our team of fully qualified, experienced installers are trained to follow all manufacturer’s installation instructions to ensure the right fire prevention methods are adhered to for your safety.
