In buildings like blocks of flats, HMOs and businesses should have commercial internal fire doors to protect people from harm should there be a fire in the building. The latest fire regulations have meant that internal fire doors must be installed in such a way that they provide a vertical and a horizontal escape route through the building.

Why you need commercial internal fire doors
These types of fire doors are designed to be installed in entrances and exits, halls and lobbies (the area between a stairway and a corridor, or where corridors are linked), as well as stairways. Commercial internal fire doors protect these areas from the fire, as well as the smoke and gases produced. The priority is to keep people safe from harm as they leave the building but also to help firefighters.
Fire safety doors are allocated an FD rating based on how long the door withstands a fire. The four principal FD ratings are FD30 (30 minutes resistance), FD60 (60 minutes), FD90 (90 minutes) and FD120 (120 minutes). By installing more than one internal fire door along a designated fire exit route, the resistance time is increased. Therefore, two FD30-rated fire safety doors along a corridor will improve the fire resistance level to 60 minutes, doubling the FD rating.
Installing internal fire doors
The new fire safety regulations came into effect in January 2023 but are only applicable to commercial and some forms of residential buildings in England. The building owner or a designated person is responsible for arranging the installation of the correct commercial internal fire doors. They also need to ensure regular fire door safety checks are carried out both quarterly and annually.
At J&D Carpentry Services, our team of fully qualified, experienced installers are trained to follow all manufacturer’s installation instructions to make sure the right fire prevention methods are adhered to for safety.
