A standard composite door is made up of wood and other materials, like UPVC, which makes them weather-resistant, low maintenance and durable. But they do not comply with the latest fire safety standards. Composite fire doors include fire retardant materials, such as steel or aluminium, to bring them up to the necessary regulatory requirements. The main difference to standard doors is the thickness of the door because of the included fire retardant materials.

Composite doors that meet fire safety standards
Therefore, a standard composite door does not comply with the latest fire safety regulations unless it has been constructed to incorporate safety-rated fire retardant materials. They must also be tested to make sure they can stand up to the heat of a fire for a minimum specified period of time. Installing more than one fire-resistant door along the fire exit route increases the resistance time and slows down the spread of the fire.
Composite fire doors need to meet a minimum fire safety standard before they are assigned an FD rating. The four most common FD ratings used are FD30, which gives 30 minutes of fire resistance, followed by FD60, FD90 and FD120 respectively. The new fire safety regulations require all residential buildings of multiple occupancy to have fire-resistant doors installed in entrances, corridors, lobbies and stairways, as well as doors accessing plant rooms, service risers and equipment cupboards.
