Is There a Fire Door Closer Fitter in Norfolk?
When conducting a fire door closer installation in the UK, we must follow current safety regulations. All fire doors must be fitted with closer mechanisms, except a locked cupboard or service ducts.
In these circumstances, they must have a sign fixed to the door that reads ‘Fire Door Keep Locked Shut’. Current British Standards for fire doors also incorporate the closers and must be tested at the same time.
What is a fire door closer?
Fire doors should be kept closed at all times, and fire door closer installation involves fitting a mechanism to the door to make sure it closes. The closer incorporates metal arms that sit above the door and allow it to swing open and shut in a controlled way. The door closers must be BS EN 1154: 1997 Building Hardware-Controlled Door Closing Devices compliant.
They must also be able to close the door to fit within the fire door frame or to engage with a latch on the door. In doing this, the closer should create the necessary seal to resist fire for at least 30 minutes.
Fire door closer installations ensure that the door closes after someone has passed through rather than running the risk of the fire door being left open accidentally. At J&D Carpentry Services, all the fire doors we supply come with a self-closing mechanism already fitted.

Benefits of a fire door closer installation
There are three main benefits to a fire door closer installation:
- It allows the fire door to close automatically, creating a tight seal all around the door frame.
- As long as it is fitted correctly, it allows for the easy opening of fire doors by everyone, including those with mobility or disability issues.
- The fire door can be fitted with a magnetic device which will hold open the door when needed, i.e. when moving multiple objects in and out of the room, but incorporates an automatic closing mechanism which is triggered in an emergency.
