How often do I need my fire door maintained?
- It’s usual to have a fire door serviced every six months
- Maintenance must be done by a qualified professional
Poorly-fitted fire doors will void your insurance
The point of a fire door is to prevent smoke and fire from spreading should a blaze break out in the building. Depending on the door’s installation, quality and ferocity of the blaze, the fire door should do its job for anything from 30 minutes up to one hour.
After you’ve had your fire door installed, it’s essential to ensure that it is maintained on a regular basis. This ensures that should there be a problem with the door over time; it will continue to work in the event of a fire.
Fire door maintenance: legal requirements
And, anyway, it’s a legal requirement to ensure any fire door in a building is effective. That responsibility falls to the owner or facilities manager of a building, guidance for whom is under Article 17 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
The fire doors must also comply with Building Regulations and conform to BS476-22 and BS EN 1634-1 standards.
