What is a fire door with push bar?

You’ve probably seen this type of heavy-duty fire door before. It tends to be – but not always – a door from a building with direct access to outside and can come in the form of double rather than single doors.

These doors also tend to be found in commercial rather than residential premises. Some sectors of the fire safety industry refer to these as ‘crash bar doors.’ This prompts many business owners to consider the prospect of fire door push bar installation for their factory, warehouse or office, and because these doors are often linked to a panic alarm, it does make sense.

Like most passive fire equipment, fire door push bar installation comes with accreditation to ensure that it has been checked and that it complies with current fire safety regulations.

How does a fire door push bar work?

The bars (which are also referred to as ‘panic bars’) allow the fire door/s to open easily and quickly by simply pressing down and pushing on it. This triggers an alarm which notifies others in the building and in some cases, is linked to the local fire station.

Sometimes the ‘bar’ is a ‘push pad.’ For security purposes, the doors can’t be opened from outside (unless there is a special facility to do so), access is usually only gained from inside the building. And in fact, the push bar provides an instant opening to allow speedy departure from the burning building.

To ensure a fire door with a push bar isn’t used as an exit from a building, it will usually be labelled with the warning that should it be opened, an alarm will sound.
