Fire Escape door

How much is it to install a fire door?

Similar to an internal fire door in that it has to resist the high temperatures generated by a fire, a fire escape door’s primary function is to provide a quick and easy way to exit a building in the event of a fire or any other emergency.

There is a misconception that a fire escape door is to stop the spread of the fire; generally, that is the purpose of internal fire safety doors. However, some fire escape doors are designed to cover both situations.

Regulations regarding fire escape doors

Fire escape doors can be fitted to a normal building exit, such as the front or back door, but can also be a dedicated emergency exit. Although they don’t need to be manufactured to quite the same rigorous regulations as internal fire safety doors, they do have to meet the standards of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) 2005. This means that fire escape doors must:

  • Open in the escape direction, i.e. outwards. Therefore, you can't use sliding or revolving doors as fire exits.
  • Not be locked or fastened in such a way that they can't be easily or immediately opened by any person in an emergency.
  • Have an emergecny push bar (or other emergency access device) fitted at all times as a quick escape. However, it must also be lockable from the outside from a security aspect.
  • Be identifiable as a fire escape door and clearly marked with signage and/or lighting.

  • Where it is easily accessible.
  • Where it gives access to a place where people can congregate safely away from the emergency.
  • Where they can be controlled from inside the building.

  • Where they are in a permanent location.
