There are strict regulations that companies and landlords now have to adhere to when it comes to the installation of fire rated steel doors. In January 2023, the Government issued new regulations, which came into force following the Grenfell Tower disaster. It is now a requirement for all fire doors, their frames as well as any self-closing devices to be well maintained and checked by an independently qualified person on a quarterly basis.

What are fire rated steel doors?

These checks are to make sure no alterations have been done and there is no damage, that there are no gaps around the door frame seals and hinges, that they shut within the door frame and that they will provide at least 30 minutes of protection against fire. If you’re not sure, we can advise on whether your existing door frame is suitable or if you need a new fire rated steel door installation.

At J&D Carpentry Services, our fire door fitters are trained, qualified, insured and very experienced in supplying and installing a wide variety of fully tested fire rated steel doors, with differing fire integrity ratings. We offer a fire door survey service and have carried out fire rated door and frame installations for private customers as flat entrance doors, as well as in commercial, educational and healthcare environments, such as universities, hospitals, office blocks and MOD sites.

Installing fire rated steel doors

Fire rated steel doors are a highly effective and safe alternative to more traditional wood fire doors. They are the only type of fire door that delivers a three-hour fire rating and should be used when more than the standard 30-minute fire rating is needed. Every fire door and frame installation we carry out is digitally recorded on our record of installation activities form, which we provide you with, so you can be sure that your installation has been conducted correctly and in line with the latest regulations.
