Fire resistant door

Fire Resistant Door

A fire-resistant door is there to protect the inhabitants of a building. They are installed in halls, lobbies (the area between a stairway and a corridor) and stairways. Their function is to protect these locations from smoke and fire so residents and other people in the building can leave safely in the event of a fire. But they also help firefighters bring fires under control and put them out.

Specifications for a fire-resistant door

The UK’s Fire Brigade specifies that fire-resistant doors should have at least three hinges and withstand a temperature of 800ºC. The main difference to standard doors is the thickness of the door. This is because fire retardant materials are included in its construction to meet official fire ratings.

Fire-resistant door ratings

Fire doors must conform to specified resistance ratings to meet the required safety standards. Fire-resistant doors are assigned an FD rating. The four most common FD ratings used are:

- FD30. This fire door provides 30 minutes of fire resistance.

- FD60. This level of fire door provides 60 minutes of fire resistance.

- FD90. This standard of fire door provides 90 minutes of fire resistance.

- FD120. Fire doors with this FD rating provide 120 minutes of fire resistance.

If there is more than one fire-resistant door along the fire exit route, the fire resistance time increases significantly as each door slows down the spread of the fire. This is called compartmentalisation and helps to protect everyone should a fire break out in a building.

The new Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022

In January 2023, new and updated fire safety regulations were introduced regarding fire door safety and maintenance in residential buildings. It’s important to note that these new regulations only apply to England and apply to owners of residential buildings, as well as others who have control over the building, such as land or managing agents.

The new regulations now require all residential buildings of multiple occupancy to have fire-resistant doors installed in entrances, corridors, lobbies and stairways, doors accessing plant rooms, service risers and cupboards that house equipment. This includes houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs), self-contained flats within buildings and rooms let in a shared property.
