Fire Safety door

Is There a Fire Safety Door Fitter in Norfolk?

Fire safety doors should be installed in all commercial buildings and residential buildings of multiple occupancy with storeys that are 11 metres or more in height. The objective of a fire safety door is to keep people in the building safe from harm should a fire break out and provide them with a route to exit the building.

These types of doors are installed at entrances and exits, halls and lobbies (the area between a stairway and a corridor, or where corridors are linked), as well as in stairways. Fire safety doors protect these areas from smoke, gases and fire, keeping people safe as they leave the building and helping firefighters.

Specifications for fire safety doors

The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 require fire safety doors to withstand temperatures up to 800ºC. They are also thicker than standard doors because fire retardant materials meet official fire ratings. Therefore, they will also need door frames that are robust and fitted to the fire safety door to make sure there are no gaps

Ratings for Fire Safety Doors

Fire safety doors need to conform with the required safety standards and are given an FD rating that determines how long the door is resistant to fire. The four main FD ratings are:

 - FD30. This fire door provides 30 minutes of fire resistance.

 - FD60. This level of fire door provides 60 minutes of fire resistance.

 - FD90. This standard of fire door provides 90 minutes of fire resistance.

 - FD120. Fire doors with this FD rating provide 120 minutes of fire resistance.

Compartmentalising fire safety doors in a building, i.e. having more than one fire door along a designated fire exit route, increases the area’s fire resistance time. So, if there are two FD30-rated fire safety doors along a corridor, the fire resistance level for that corridor doubles to 60 minutes.

The new Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022

In 2022, new fire safety regulations were introduced regarding fire door safety and their maintenance in residential buildings. The regulations became effective in January 2023 but only for commercial and residential buildings in England. It is the responsibility of the building owner(s) or designated person, such as a managing agent, to ensure that the correct fire safety doors are installed and that regular checks are carried out quarterly and annually.
