Fire shutter maintenance: what can go wrong
Fire doors typically age in terms of their hardware - hinges, handles, and door closures where the seals become worn over time. The wood on the door may also warp or become damaged in some way.
It may be tempting to cut costs and replace a door hinge yourself with something you’ve bought from the DIY store down the road. But don’t.
Fire door hinges are manufactured specifically to withstand the heat of up to 800 degrees centigrade. The average hinge in your nearest B&Q isn’t. So, if you did replace the original hinge with a cheaper version, the fire door isn’t going to work when you need it most.
In other words, changing the hinge yourself to save a pound or two could put your employees' lives at risk. Doesn’t seem worth it now, does it?
How Long Do Fire Doors Last?
The majority of fire doors will last for around 20 years before they need replacing. But this is only the case if the doors are regularly surveyed, maintained and repaired. A busy door (i.e. one which is used daily by many people) should be inspected at least every six months.
Professional & Accreditted
If your fire door does need repairing, then it is essential that this is carried out by a professional.
They should have accreditation to fit fire doors. If your chosen installer can’t prove this, then go elsewhere. It really is that simple – and crucial.
