Because it has the potential to save lives, a fire door must be put in by a certified fire door installer. When fitting a fire door frame here at J&d Carpentry, we always ensure that there are no gaps between the door and the frame.
We also check that the seals are in tip-top condition too. We do this because a properly-fitted fire door can hold back flames and smoke for at least 30 minutes and often up to one hour. Once we are 100% sure your fire door is correctly fitted, we will issue you with a certificate which you can then send to your building insurance company.
When fitting a fire door frame, it is vital to check that the rest of the components that make up the fire door are all in excellent working order too. That means the hinges, push bar, glass and any other hardware.

Experience in construction always counts
It may be that, as the owner of a building, you want a new fire door fitted to an old frame. The reason for this being that you’re worried fitting a new frame might damage the surrounding wall. That’s understandable, but in the event of a fire, it could mean that the door wouldn’t work as efficiently.
In our opinion, there is simply no point in putting a building before human lives. If you are the ‘responsible person’ for the building, then, under UK law, you have a duty of care to protect people in the vicinity of the building in the event of a fire. See Article 17 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Building Regulations also state that fire doors must be compliant with BS476-22 and BS EN 1634-1.
Most modern fire doors can be purchased with their surrounding frame intact. In this case, both the door and the frame itself will have been checked and fully certified for use against fire.
