Installing a fire-rated door: breathing space
A fire-rated door (also referred to as a ‘fire-resistant door’ or simply a ‘fire door’) is built specially to withstand both fire and smoke. The heavy materials in the door – such as composite and steel - mean it can prevent a fire and smoke from spreading for a time, allowing emergency services to get to the scene and for anyone in the building to flee.
It quite literally then, gives those on the premises much-needed breathing space. Depending on the fire door’s construction (i.e. which materials are used) this could be for 20 minutes up to an hour and a half. Eventually, the fire will burn through, but it may have provided the time lapse necessary for firefighters to get a good handle on the flames.

Installing a fire rated door
After installation, your fire door will require inspection on an ongoing basis. This allows us to ensure it is working as it should and that any deteriorating parts can be fixed as soon as possible. After all, a fire door that isn’t working properly is simply ‘a door.’
The team here at J&D Carpentry provide regular fire door inspections for clients. This involves a digital survey informing you of any areas in the door which need attention or upgrading.
