Where can I get internal fire doors?
There is a misconception that any door can be used as an internal fire door, but that is not the case. This is principally because an internal fire door is built to withstand the very high temperatures of a fire to protect people.
What are the specifications for an internal fire door?
According to the Fire Brigade, internal fire doors should have at least three hinges and withstand a temperature of 800ºC. In most cases, these doors are often thicker than standard doors and, therefore, the frame the door sits in needs to match the size of the door. If it doesn’t, the door and frame do not create the proper seal required to keep fire out.
In addition, internal fire doors should be installed by a trained and experienced person, like our qualified fire door installers at J&D Carpentry Services.

What are the current regulations regarding internal fire doors?
Following the Grenfell Inquiry, new and updated regulations were put in place in January 2023, which extended the circumstances when internal fire doors are required, and their maintenance. Now, as well as commercial properties needing fire doors, residential buildings of multiple occupancies must also have internal fire doors installed. This includes houses of multiple occupancies (HMOs), self-contained flats within buildings, and rooms let in a shared property.
Contrary to popular belief, fire doors need to be regularly inspected, tested and maintained to ensure they are working correctly. This includes checking for any signs of damage or where repairs are needed, ensuring the hinges and self-closing devices are fitted properly and are working, and that there are no gaps between the door and the frame.
